The weight of Japanese sumo wrestlers became a problem:  According to a report from the Japanese newspaper “Yomiuri Shimbun,” several sumo wrestlers recently traveled to Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture to participate in a special national sports event.
They boarded flights at Tokyo Haneda Airport and Osaka Itami Airport. Due to their weight affecting flight safety, Japan Airlines arranged for a special flight to transport the sumo wrestlers to their destination.

Japan Airlines stated that after receiving the wrestlers’ bookings, they assumed each person’s weight to be 120 kilograms for calculation purposes. They found that this would pose a risk of the aircraft not being able to carry enough fuel.

Japan Airlines also pointed out that due to the difficulty of landing large aircraft at Amami Airport, they decided not to replace the 165-seat Boeing 737-800 with a larger plane.
Instead, they arranged for the 14 wrestlers at Itami Airport to gather at Haneda Airport before transporting all 27 wrestlers to Amami Oshima on a charter flight.

It is understood that the special national sports event began on the 13th and ended on the 15th, with approximately 460 participants.
After the tournament, Japan Airlines also added extra flights from Amami to Fukuoka and replaced the regular Fukuoka to Haneda flights with larger aircraft.
Japan Airlines admitted that situations where a special flight is arranged due to weight issues are quite rare.
