the Prague shooting tragedy: The gunman who was responsible for the worst mass shooting in the Czech Republic, on the eve of this crime, recorded a series of terrifying diaries in the Telegram messaging application.
David Kozak, 24, opened fire at Charles University in Prague on December 21, killing 14 people and injuring at least 20 others.
According to Czech media, before the attack, he bragged about his plans to shoot at the school and mentioned past massacres on his Telegram channel.
He said the channel would be a “diary” of his life, writing: “I always wanted to kill. I thought I would go crazy in the future.”
In a post believed to be Ilzenaz Galyaev, 19, who killed nine people at a school in Russia in 2021, Kozak praised someone named “Ilenaz”.
He also wrote about Russian school shooter Alina Afanaskina, a 14-year-old schoolgirl who shot and killed another student and wounded five others earlier this month.
What is Telegram?
Telegram is an instant messaging app that is a bit similar to WhatsApp.
This messaging app is growing in popularity as it offers some advanced privacy and encryption features and supports large group chat features.
Users of this messenger also like it because it is not linked to other social media platforms. For example, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are owned by Meta. However, it has also gained a reputation as a haven for conspiracy theorists and extremists.
Several investigations into the January 6 incident at the US Capitol in 2021 pointed to Telegram as a prime location for people planning to attack the far-right.
Telegram has repeatedly announced that it has stepped up efforts to disable accounts run by hate groups and extremists.
“a kind of introvert”
According to local media reports, Kozak is believed to have been a quiet introvert with no criminal record.
He had a bachelor’s degree in history and European studies and was pursuing a master’s degree with a focus on Polish history.
“He was kind of an introvert, probably weird like any other person,” one resident told local media.
“The family seemed normal. We went to their cottage many years ago. “His father used to be my boss and they were friends outside of work, including his wife.”
Kozak kept his Telegram channel private until the attack when he opened it for reading. It was later removed.
