The Actors Who Have Portrayed the Iconic Character of Willy Wonka

The Actors Who Have Portrayed the Iconic Character of Willy Wonka: With Timothée Chalamet’s debut as Willy Wonka, it’s worth looking back at the actors who have brought the iconic character to life both on screen and stage.
The role dates back to 1971 and Gene Wilder’s performance in the first film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1964 book. Wilder’s rendition became an instant classic, despite Dahl’s own dislike of the adaptation. In 2005, Tim Burton put his spin on the story with Johnny Depp as Wonka. The character then made his Broadway debut in 2016 with Christian Borle in the top hat. Now, Chalamet will offer his take on the 2023 prequel film Wonka.
According to the film’s director Paul King, Chalamet brings heart and emotional truth to the usually mischievous and mysterious chocolatier. The role also gave Chalamet a chance to showcase his singing and dancing.
“It’s really a tour de force for him there,” King said, noting Chalamet’s months of preparation and rehearsals.
