Asante Logue Regional Medical Center reported to police in early December that a former employee was suspected of stealing medications, including replacing intravenous fentanyl solutions. Fentanyl is an opioid analgesic that can lead to fatal overdoses when abused and is one of the major drug problems in the United States.
According to the New York Post, some sources revealed that the nurse involved injected patients with unsterilized tap water to cover up her misappropriation of hospital painkillers. The case began in the fall of 2022 and is suspected to have caused at least 10 deaths so far.
Police declined to disclose the number of people affected
The Rogue Valley Times pointed out that the families of two patients were notified that the patients died because their painkillers were replaced with unsterilized tap water.
Police have notified all affected patients but have declined to reveal the exact number of people who have died or been affected. The hospital said it was very saddened to learn of the problem had notified law enforcement of the situation and was closely cooperating with the investigation.
The Oregon Health Authority confirmed on January 3 that authorities were investigating related reports of infections and deaths. It’s unclear if anyone has been arrested.
