Indian Government Employees Wear Motorcycle Helmets: Government employees in Telangana, India have resorted to wearing motorcycle helmets while working in a dilapidated building to avoid being hit by falling concrete slabs from the ceiling.
A video of several male employees at the ‘Development Office’ in Jagtial district, Telangana, donning motorcycle helmets while working has gone viral on Indian social media.
Ironically, the Development Office is responsible for developing the district by providing internet to villagers and creating infrastructure. However, the workplace itself is in such poor condition that workers must protect themselves from falling debris.
Local media reported that staff have been demanding relocation to a safer office after a colleague nearly suffered brain damage when a slab of concrete fell from the ceiling.
According to News Nine, the roof of the Mandal Parishad Development Office has been leaking since last year and is now dilapidated. The moisture has caused pieces of the ceiling to break off, leaving employees with no option but to find ways to protect themselves.
After the video went viral earlier this month, government officials in Jagtial district, Telangana announced the Development Office workers would soon be moved to another building.
Motorcycle helmets are not a novel form of protection for Indian government employees. A few years ago, a similar group of workers in Bihar were also at risk of suffering brain injuries from a crumbling ceiling.
